The Call to Worship

Psalm 68

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. A Song.
 1 Let God arise,
         Let His enemies be scattered;
         Let those also who hate Him flee before Him.
 2 As smoke is driven away,
         So drive them away;
         As wax melts before the fire,
         So let the wicked perish at the presence of God.
 3 But let the righteous be glad;
         Let them rejoice before God;
         Yes, let them rejoice exceedingly.

 4 Sing to God, sing praises to His name;
         Extol Him who rides on the clouds,[a]
         By His name YAH,
         And rejoice before Him.

 5 A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows,
         Is God in His holy habitation.

Footnotes:

  1. Psalm 68:4 Masoretic Text reads deserts; Targum reads heavens (compare verse 34 and Isaiah 19:1).

Hearing and Prociaming God's Word

Frist Reading

Isaiah 28:14-18

14 Therefore hear the word of the LORD, you scornful men,
      Who rule this people who are in Jerusalem,
       15 Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death,
      And with Sheol we are in agreement.
      When the overflowing scourge passes through,
      It will not come to us,
      For we have made lies our refuge,
      And under falsehood we have hidden ourselves.”

A Cornerstone in Zion

16 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:

      “ Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation,
      A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;
      Whoever believes will not act hastily.
       17 Also I will make justice the measuring line,
      And righteousness the plummet;
      The hail will sweep away the refuge of lies,
      And the waters will overflow the hiding place.
       18 Your covenant with death will be annulled,
      And your agreement with Sheol will not stand;
      When the overflowing scourge passes through,
      Then you will be trampled down by it.

New Testament Lesson:

  Peter 2:1-10

1 Peter 2

 1 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,[a] 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

The Chosen Stone and His Chosen People

4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture,

      “ Behold, I lay in Zion
      A chief cornerstone, elect, precious,
      And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.”[b]

7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient,[c]

      “ The stone which the builders rejected
      Has become the chief cornerstone,”[d]

 8 and

      “ A stone of stumbling
      And a rock of offense.”[e]

   They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.
9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

John 14:1-18

John 14

The Way, the Truth, and the Life
 1Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions;[a] if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.[b] 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.”
5
Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
The Father Revealed

7If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”
8
Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.
The Answered Prayer

12 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask[c] anything in My name, I will do it.
Jesus Promises Another Helper

15If you love Me, keep[d] My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

Footnotes:

  1. John 14:2 Literally dwellings
  2. John 14:2 NU-Text adds a word which would cause the text to read either if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? or if it were not so I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.
  3. John 14:14 NU-Text adds Me.
  4. John 14:15 NU-Text reads you will keep.
